As solar energy systems continue to evolve, so do the materials and technologies powering them. One of the latest advancements—TOPCon (Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact) cells—offers significant efficiency gains. However, these cells bring with them new challenges, especially when it comes to moisture sensitivity.

To address this, RenewSys has introduced a Super Barrier Backsheet designed specifically to safeguard these advanced cells from moisture-induced degradation.

This innovation stands out as a one-time solution to a growing industry concern & reduces dependence on G2G, thereby allowing flexibility of materials selection to module manufacturers.

Solar modules, by design, are sensitive electronic systems exposed to a range of environmental factors. One of the most critical threats to their longevity and efficiency is moisture ingress. Excess moisture leads to:

·         Corrosion of metallic contacts

·         Deterioration at the cell junctions

·         Reduced power output

·         Shortened module lifespan

With the advent of TOPCon solar cells, this problem has intensified. The use of silver in the metalization paste makes these cells especially prone to moisture-induced damage. Hence, their protection requires enhanced barrier solutions that go beyond conventional standards.

Why Glass-Backsheet Modules Need Special Attention

While Glass-to-Glass (G2G) modules inherently offer better moisture resistance due to encapsulation from both sides, Glass-Backsheet modules remain widely used due to their lightweight and ease of handling. However, traditional backsheet materials typically have moisture permeability rates over 1.4 g/m²/day, which is inadequate for sensitive TOPCon cells.

Industry experts now recognize that for TOPCon modules to remain viable in the Glass-Backsheet configuration, the backsheet’s moisture permeability should not exceed 0.5 g/m²/day.

RenewSys’ Breakthrough: Super High Barrier Backsheet

Responding to this urgent industry need, RenewSys has developed a next-generation backsheet that offers a moisture permeability between 0.3 to 0.35 g/m²/day—a remarkable achievement that sets a new standard in module protection.

Key Benefits:

ree
  • Superior Moisture Barrier: Exceeds industry requirements for TOPCon module protection.

  • Field Reliability: Ensures sustained performance and durability of modules, especially in humid environments.

  • Lightweight & Durable: Retains the handling and installation advantages of Glass-Backsheet configurations.

  • Ease of Maintenance: Supports easy cleaning and module replacement without added weight or fragility.

As the solar industry transitions toward higher-efficiency cell technologies like TOPCon, module protection strategies must evolve in parallel. RenewSys' innovative backsheet material provides a timely, effective, and scalable solution to the moisture challenge. For manufacturers and project developers looking to future-proof their installations, this product offers both performance assurance and peace of mind.
